What Are Biomarkers and Why Do They Matter?
Biomarkers are measurable signals in blood. For chronic pain, the useful ones are inflammatory cytokines, muscle enzymes, oxidative-stress markers, and cartilage-turnover proteins. They describe what is happening in tissue this week, not what a photograph of bone looked like last month.
An MRI can show a disc bulge. It cannot tell you whether IL-6 is high, whether muscle is breaking down, or whether cartilage is actively degrading. Those are often the reasons the same bulge hurts in one person and not in another.
